Content Aware Scale Online — resize, compare and export photos
Adjust your photo’s aspect ratio with seam carving, compare the result, then download. Free, no signup and no image upload. Quiet backgrounds and small ratio changes work best.

How it works
- 1 Upload your image — drop any PNG, JPEG, or WebP file (up to 25 MB / 4000×4000 px). Nothing is uploaded to a server; the file stays in your browser's memory.
- 2 Choose a target — pick a platform preset or enter a custom aspect ratio. You can mark areas to protect; large ratio changes may need automatic cropping before seam carving.
- 3 Download the result — compare the before/after and read any quality note, then download in PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Processing time depends on the image and your device.
Will this work for my photo?
Quiet backgrounds and modest ratio changes are the best starting point. Text, repeating patterns and subjects near an edge need a careful preview. For large changes, the image tool may crop before carving and will show a quality note.

Content-aware scale — also called seam carving — is an image resizing algorithm introduced by Avidan and Shamir at SIGGRAPH 2007. Instead of uniformly stretching or cropping pixels to fit a new aspect ratio, it computes a per-pixel energy map using a Sobel gradient and removes (or duplicates) one-pixel-wide paths through the lowest-energy regions — sky, walls, out-of-focus backgrounds. The goal is to let quieter parts of the background absorb more of the change. Edges, faces and text can still distort.
Photoshop shipped this as Content-Aware Scale in CS4. Our tool runs the same class of algorithm — a Rust port of caire, compiled to WebAssembly — entirely in your browser. Face detection is enabled by default, giving detected faces higher priority while choosing seams. This does not guarantee that faces remain unchanged. Your selected image is processed locally. The site still makes network requests for application files, fonts and analytics; those are separate from the image processing.
Start with a photo that has space around the subject and make a modest ratio change. Large changes may trigger automatic cropping. Compare faces, lettering and straight lines before downloading; protection settings do not guarantee unchanged details.
A free online alternative to Photoshop Content-Aware Scale
If you searched for Photoshop Content-Aware Scale but only need a quick resize, this browser tool covers the common case: reshape a photo to a new aspect ratio using seam carving and, for larger ratio changes, an automatic crop before carving. It is free to use, works online, and keeps the image on your device.
Use it for fast aspect-ratio changes, social media crops, headers, thumbnails, and product images where the background can absorb the resize. For detailed retouching, layered edits, or manual paint-over protection, Photoshop is still the heavier professional option.

FAQ
- What is content-aware scale?
- Content-aware scale — also called seam carving — is an image resizing algorithm introduced by Avidan and Shamir at SIGGRAPH 2007. It computes a per-pixel energy map and removes or duplicates paths of low-energy pixels (sky, walls, backgrounds) to reshape images. Subjects can still distort, and large ratio changes may require cropping.
- What formats are supported?
- PNG, JPEG, and WebP up to 25 MB. Large images may be scaled down before processing.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. Content Aware Scale processes images entirely within your browser using a WebAssembly binary compiled from Rust. Your image is decoded into the browser's sandboxed memory, processed, and written back out as a file download. No network request containing image data is made at any point.
- What's the difference between Fill Frame and Smart Crop?
- Fill Frame expands a dimension by adding lower-energy pixel paths. Smart Crop shrinks a dimension by removing them. Large ratio changes may also trigger an automatic crop before carving; check the preview and quality note.
- How fast is it?
- Processing time depends on image dimensions, the amount of resizing and your device. Processing runs in a Web Worker via WebAssembly. Large changes can take longer; wait for the preview before downloading.
- How is this different from Photoshop Content-Aware Scale?
- Same underlying seam-carving idea, but free, browser-only, no Adobe account, no install. Photoshop's implementation is more mature for interactive paint-over edits; Content Aware Scale is optimized for quick aspect-ratio adaptation across social-media platforms.
- Can I use content-aware scale without Photoshop?
- Yes. This is a free online alternative to Photoshop Content-Aware Scale. It runs in your browser, so you do not need Photoshop, Creative Cloud, or a desktop download.
- Is this content-aware scale tool free?
- Yes. The browser tool is free to use, with no signup, no watermark, and no image upload.
- Can I protect areas from removal?
- Yes. Face protection is on by default, and you can draw protect or remove regions on the source image. These guide the resize but do not guarantee every detail is preserved.
